Neighborhood Food Distro: Folks grow produce specifically to be freely shared. Crop Swap: Folks bring varieties of produce to swap out at the stands for what they don’t have. Free Farm has always blended both models in an effort to provide the foundational infrastructure necessary to develop thriving neighborhood food systems.

This year, we are attempting to lean more heavily into the crop swap aspect of the stands for a few reasons. In the past produce for the stands came from the Free Farm plots as well as from non profit partners. Many of these partners have experienced instability in recent years and in response we are attempting to move toward a model that is supported more heavily by residents growing together in coordination to support each other. Free Farm stands serve as a hub for neighborhood food systems. Free Farm has developed an infrastructure that neighbors can “plug into.” FFS lots, the neighborhood food hub, and shared knowledge, tools, and seeds are the backbone.

Our goal is to activate backyard gardeners and other collective gardeners to contribute produce to weekly Free Farm Stands and participate in coordinated seed saving in future seasons to help build a robust and climate adapted community seed bank. Crop swapping is the first step in this process

Personnel

• Wear clean clothes and closed toe shoes, wash your hands before harvesting, and avoid harvesting if you are sick.

Tools & Materials

• Sanitize all tools and materials that you will use in your harvesting including harvesting bins, scissors, salad spinners and storage totes.

• To sanitize you can use either sanidate, white vinegar or rubbing alcohol.

For After Harvest

• Snips, rags, harvest totes of some sort, wash totes of some sort, water, sanitizer, salad spinner, ice packs, coolers, storage bins, holey bins.

The Basics

Before Harvest

• Gather all the supplies you will need for the day, take into account what you will be harvesting, how much, and how many people will be helping.

• Sanitize all the tools and supplies that you will be using.

During Harvest

• Harvest fresh produce correctly using clean and sanitized tools and bins.

After Harvest

• Store produce with ice packs to keep them cool while you finish harvesting.

• If you can, hold produce in the shade after it has been harvested.

• Clean everything up and reset the space.

Sanitization

Sanitizing Before Harvest

• Using a clean rag and sanidate mixture.

• Spray each tool with sanidate, wipe with rag, spray one more time and let dry.

• Spray each bin with sanidate, and let it dry naturally.

Sanitizing After Harvest / Distro

• Spray each tool with sanidate, wipe with rag, spray one more time and let dry.

• Spray each bin with water and wipe any residue.

• Spray each bin with sanidate on the inside and outside, and let it dry naturally.

• Let each bin dry completely before stacking bins together.

Transportation

• If you are transporting dry storage crops, tree fruits, or tomatoes transport them in holey bins or cardboard boxes.

• If you are transporting leafy greens, herbs, cold storage root crops, or tender vegetables, transport them in a harvest bin or cooler with ice packs for keeping them cool during the transport process.

• At the Free Farm Stands we always have extra bins with ice packs for storing stuff. We put out a little bit at a time so everything on the table is fresh.

What to do when you arrive at a Free Farm Stand

• Bring your own bag for taking produce

• Say hi! And show us what you brought!

• We can place produce on the table, and if there is a lot of it we will put some in a cool bin to maintain quality until the produce on the table is taken.

• Grab other varieties of produce that you aren’t growing.

• Grab a cup of coffee and hang out!

What not to contribute

Free Farm only features the highest quality, best produce, because that is what we all deserve! It’s ok if the veggies are ugly or not uniform, but we don’t want anything that might make people sick or is not of high quality. The way we harvest and share produce is a sign of respect and dignity that we show each other.

• Store or farmers market bought produce.

• Extra produce that has been sitting in the fridge that you are not gonna eat.

• Overripe produce: like giant zucchinis, eggplants and okra that no one will take (just compost it).

• Produce that has been stored incorrectly and either froze, wilted, gone limp or all three.

• Produce that hasn’t been washed properly.

Things to Avoid

Don’t rush things! Use the tools that we have to build the alternate system that we want to see. Start by growing a couple of things and learn how to grow them well. Make sure you understand the whole process and aren’t rushing through and doing things improperly- sometimes rushing to get things done actually just wastes everyone’s time and energy. Take your time, learn, and build skills and relationships to build a strong network that will last.

Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Better to take 5 years to fully realize your vision well than to rush it and burnout or burn relationships. If I have to throw away the things you bring, that will burn our relationships and dull our trust.

Free Farm Syndicate is a collective of urban farmers and gardeners that grow and distribute free fresh produce in our neighborhoods. Our goal is to build a stronger local food system through the development of neighborhood-based food production networks.

2025 - What a year for Free Farm!

Thanks to our generous volunteers we were able to grow over 7,000lbs of produce.

That’s right folks, almost a full metric ton greater than last year! Through volunteer labor and community support we grew over 7,000lbs and more than 50 different varieties of produce. We are so thankful for the individuals who donated their time to us. We are a volunteer run operation, and our supporters donate their time, energy and expertise to help us help our community. Our volunteers show up after their day jobs and on weekends all throughout the growing session to help us achieve this kind of feat. Without the sweat, dedication, and passion of our volunteers, Free Farm would not be able to do what we do.

We hosted free farm stands 66 times, across three locations.

Free Farm hosts produce distribution stands across Omaha on Saturdays and Sundays. This year we added a third location to expand our reach to make organic produce more accessible. So from June to October, rain or shine we load up our produce, pop up our tents and set up our tables to distribute what we have grown to our community. Our distribution stands also serve as a crop-swap for our community to bring produce they grow, and take produce they don’t. They are the hub of the food network we are building, and our third location supported us in expanding our network. Our mission is to create a resilient, local food system that is accessible to everyone. Farm Stands couldn’t happen without the help of amazing Free Farm volunteers who show up rain or shine to build community every week! Thanks to community partners, and neighbor gardens we distributed more than 12,000 lbs of produce at the Free Farm Stands in 2025.

More plots, pollinators and perennials

Not only did we add another distribution location, we added two more growing plots. In total, we now have 7 plots where we get to grow produce for our people. As our plot numbers increased, our opportunities for planting new things increased as well. We had an incredible opportunity to partner with Milkweed Matters and planted pollinator habitats and dye gardens. Through this partnership we planted 3 new perennial gardens that featured perennial vegetables like asparagus, and native pollinator habitat. Increased pollinator traffic will help to manage pest problems in the future and improve produce yields!

We saved our seeds to share next year

As members of the Blazing Star Seed Coop (BSSC) we partnered to host 2 Seed Shares in February 2025. At Seed Shares neighbors can access locally grown seed that is climate adapted to our region, as well as high quality open pollinated seed from reputable seed companies around the country.

We also participated in BSSC’s Coordinated Growing, where we worked with other coop members to coordinate our 2025 gardens for seed saving. Seed Saving helps to preserve biodiversity and culture, and to develop seed varieties that are climate adapted to changing conditions.

In 2025 Free Farm sponsored Seed Processing Days, where BSSC coop members who coordinated their gardens for seed saving and the wider community come together to learn about seed saving, clean seed, and prepare seeds to be shared out at the Seed Shares in 2026. Lead 10 workshops focused on localized, green skill building.

Throughout the year, we hosted several workshops to build our network capacity. Workshops covered topics such as how to harvest produce safely to share at our distribution stands, storage techniques for quality produce, garden bed preparation, seed saving, and basic gardening skills. We hope by providing our community will this education, they feel encouraged to bring produce to trade at our 2026 distribution stands.

Jams, blends and salsas (oh my!)

The freezers are bursting with frozen nightshades, the metal shelves at our headquarters are full with jars of dried herbs, garlic, onions and piled with cured squash. This would not be possible without the long days evenings spent chopping, freezing, dehydrating and generally preserving the harvest while it’s fresh. Happy New Year!

As we look forward to the growing season of 2025, we want to take a moment to

look back and celebrate a few of our successes from last year…

In 2024, we:

Grew >5,000 lbs of food.

Free Farm grows and distributes produce and connects other local growers for the common goal of addressing local food insecurity. We believe that food is a fundamental right, and access to nutritious food changes lives.

Served >1,100 people at free farm stands.

FFS hosts two weekly distributions during the growing season at two of our plots. All produce available is free to take, though donations are appreciated!

Bought land.

FFS grows produce on 5 formerly vacant plots throughout East Omaha. This year, we purchased two of those plots from the City. We intend to continue working and improving the land long into the future! First up on our list - installing water hookups. Please reach out if you know someone who could help!

Made improvements.

We built stairs at Starlight, a timber frame shed at Dorcas, installed more pollinator-friendly native plants at Bancroft, improved fencing & trellising and amended the soil with mulch, compost, and/or cover crops at all 5 plots.

Collaborated.

FFS has many valued partnerships in the community which we leveraged to accomplish some really awesome things including coordinated growing & distros, education, a farmers almanac, seed saving, and more.

Saved Seed.

FFS worked with Blazing Star Seed Coop to grow out open pollinated seed to develop local ecotype varieties, continuing to build a resilient community seed bank.

Raised almost $7,000 at two community fundraisers.

FFS raises funds through grant writing and our two annual fundraisers held at O’Leavers where our products are available for suggested donation (e.g. jam, salsa, spices, art, and more).

Established a neighborhood food hub.

We found that having a place to call our own has been wonderful! We call the home we’re renting HQ and it serves as a place for meeting/community gatherings, curing, dehydrating, processing, canning, and storing our dry goods.

Weathered the storm.

Spring storms brought flash flooding through our Benson plot and threatened to halt our season! We were able to mend fences, get debris out, test the soil for contaminants, and continue growing there.

Got help!

Throughout the year, we held work days, free farm stands, meetings, seed processing days, fundraisers, seed shares, seed schools, canning days, processing days, organization days, not to mention behind the scenes solo work - and it all got done! A huge thank you to our volunteers who made it all possible!

The summer is flying by and we have a few things to share!

FFS Updates

The Omaha City Council has approved the purchase of two of our gardens, Starlight and Myrtle! 🥳 We are excited to continue growing food together for each other at these plots for many years to come 🌱.

And we're happy to report that our gardens are producing and we have some delicious veggies available at our Free Farm Stands (more info below)! Here's what we'll have this weekend:

• Onions, Lettuce, Kale, Potatoes, Carrots, Leeks, Garlic, Herbs (Cilantro, Chives, Oregano, Tarragon, Thyme, Sage, Dill, Basil)

We are purchasing two of our garden plots from the city of Omaha!

• We have leased two formerly vacant lots in midtown (Starlight and Myrtle) for 3 and 4 years, respectively, and have grown thousands of pounds of produce on them.

• We are eager to own the plots so that we can continue growing on them and making long-term investments that will benefit the whole community.

But, the deal isn't done yet - this is your chance to be heard!

• The agreement will go before the Omaha City Council at their meeting on Tuesday, June 4th starting at 2pm.

• We invite you to join us and share any thoughts you have about Free Farm, our work, or the purchase of these plots.

Free Farm grows and distributes produce and connects other local growers with the common goal of addressing local food insecurity. We believe that food is a fundamental right, and access to nutritious food changes lives. We:

• Grow produce on 5 urban farm plots in Omaha

• Host 2 weekly Free Farm stands in the summer

• Save bioregional seed for the Blazing Star Seed Coop

• Grew and distributed over 5,000 lbs of food in 2023

We are a group of passionate volunteers committed to respecting boundaries, lifting up skills and specialties, and finding the joy in community. We hope you'll support and/or join our efforts to grow food together, for each other in 2024!

Come to the 10th Annual Seed Share and pick up some seeds for your 2024 garden!

The Seed Share is a great opportunity to score seeds ranging from unique local ecotype varieties to common garden veggies and herbs. It's also an excellent time to network with other growers, ask gardening questions, and get involved with local urban ag organizations

Blazing Star Seed Coop will be sharing locally-grown and saved seed from their community seed bank, Bellevue Native Plant Society will have native pollinator seed, and Milkweed Matters will be making milkweed seed balls so we can all do our part to help the monarchs. Big thanks to the Big Garden for coordinating and filling in the gaps with other seed packets! Did we mention all the seeds are free?! And you can bring in seeds you'd like to share, too! Just visit the seed saving table to register them. Come network with some of the best growers in Omaha as we gear up for the growing season!

Exciting news: Workdays are back!

It’s time to tend our gardens again and we need your help! Please follow us on Instagram to find the latest information about upcoming work days.

Workdays are a chance to get your hands dirty and typically involve weeding, watering, mulching, planting, and harvesting. It’s recommended to bring water and gardening gloves. Stop by if you can, bring a friend, and farm with us!
